  It pains me to write a negative review about McMaster's beloved Phoenix, but I was so disappointed on Friday night, that I felt others should be warned. THE PORTION SIZES have been cut by 30-40%, no joke. My Honey chicken "burger" was a measly 3oz chicken cutlet. It tasted good, but it was $16.50 with tax/tip. The service was not great and it was sweltering hot inside. I will likely skip our softball team's next post-game outing. Look at the other recent reviews on here and you'll see that I'm not alone in my recent negative impression.

  I've spent A LOT of weekends and money at the phoenix. I was generally pleased with its service until recently. Since 2017, it takes around 5 minutes (minimum) to get a waiter or waitress. Sometimes I now even have to wave at them and obviously, they don't like it. It takes around another 5 minutes (minimum again) to get your drink and around 20-25 minutes for food. Kitchen closes WAY TOO early for being a restaurant-bar. I've noticed that (not always) food is served without cutlery and napkins. This should never NEVER happen. It's fine if you're going for a drink, but there are cheaper, faster, places.

  Staff was very polite and well-mannered. The speed of service, however, was slow. They got our desert order incorrect. They offered no refills. They provided me with a napkin that seemed to have chocolate sauce all over it. Portion size was unexpectedly small. Finally, they only came back to our table twice in a whole hour. I had high hopes for this place, but unfortunately, the whole experience was very underwhelming.

  The Phoenix can be all things. Casual beers with eats, lively get together or filling pub food dinner. I love stopping in to sit at the bar and striking up a conversation with the interesting university crowd over a good craft beer.
